What are the odds two parents of an infant will die?

My wife and I were recently chosen as God parents. I'm just curious how much of a cultural necessity it is to nominate someone for the role in the event of both parents meeting their end. Is this a practice that dates back to the days of massive famine, plague, or spontaneous combustion of the parents in the magical time of miracles like when jesus walked on water and what not? What are the odds two parents of an infant will die?
In my experience, being God Parents doesn't mean that you receive the baby if the parents become deceased. It is to provide spiritual guidance (and sponsorship) to the child.

Guardianship is secured through the parents Will (a binding legal document). What are the odds two parents of an infant will die?
I don't think their is a source for a statistic like this. Nowadays it's for the purpose of assuring the spiritual needs of the child are looked after rather than the material ones met. Whatever the intentions were, stuff does happen and it's good to cover a base like this ahead of time rather than when it's too late. While the chances are a lot slimmer than it was in the ages when the best we could hope for in longevity was 35-40 years and women died in childbirth all the time as the men would pass on due to war or less than good work or medical conditions; wills are made out, insurance is bought and choices are made in advance for these types of concerns.
